Again, I know, not a Nintendo game, but I wanted to review something that I've dedicated the last week of my life too.![]() The Metal Gear series is infamous for it's in depth story telling and break through graphics. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (MGS4) has been one of the most anticipated games of the last 2 years for this very reason. As per graphics, MGS4 is the best on the market right now. There's not a single bit of pre-rendered movie graphics, and there's no need either. Every view, every angle has been consitered. Graphically, this game is a masterpiece. What's even better, is this game can look this good without having the frame rate dip once, throughout the entire game. ![]() Everything you see is the in game graphics engine. What you see is what you play. Aint it pretty? The game play in this game is outstanding as well. What's interesting is pretty much every Metal Gear game has played about the same since Metal Gear Solid on the PSX. They changed it up slightly for this one. And for once, they didn't foul anything up by changing a working formula. The reason for the change in the control scheme was to help implement a new aiming system and some new weapon functions. Honestly it works quite well. For Metal Gear vets like myself, it takes a little getting use to, but when you do, you realise they should've done it this way to begin with. ![]() The over the shoulder aiming system is one of the new features this game has to offer. It makes gun use much quicker and less clumsy. There's also some new features in this game. One of them being snakes movements. He is now capable of playing dead, and even inching along like a worm. Along with some new movement features, the CQC that was implemented in Snake Eater has made it's way over into this generation. What's also made it's way over from Snake Eater is the camo index. Now there's a slight twist, you have something called 'Octo Camo'. What this does is it changes automatically like a cameleon for whatever surface you're on. But also like in Snake Eater, you have to remain still for it to work properly. You can camouflage on pretty much any surface, from walls, to rubble and even carpet. As for the sound track, once again Konami outshines itself. The music is some of the best I've ever seen in any video game soundtrack and is perfectly fitting in every scene. What's even better, is they provide you with an iPod so you can not only choose what music you want to listen to if you so desire, but throughout the game you can find bonus songs from the past games. As for ambience, not much can match it. In certain scenes, you are surrounded by a raging battle with bullets whizing past your head, with shouts of battle cries as the two opposing parties lay waste to both the landscape and each other. What's even better is the voice acting for all the extras is perfect and not poorly done like in most games. Which leads us to the games main character voice work. Many of these are returning personalities from the previous games, and we know they're top knotch. The others had some high expectation and pulled it off. ![]() Even when all hel! is breaking loose, everything sounds amazing. As for story, I can't say much without spoiling anything so I'll keep it simple. It's widely known that this is the last game in the genre. Because of that Hideo wanted to tie up all the loose ends that have been created through out the series. Because of this, the story is fairly intense. It hooks you in to the point of not wanting to put anything down. In fact, if you have somewhere to be the next day, I don't recommend playing late because I guarantee it will be hours before you want to turn the system off again. The cast of this game is what really drives the story along. Each charicter, with their own personalities and history, make up the primary story. ![]() With such a strong cast of characters, not much can go wrong. A completely unnecessary feature that was tagged onto this game is online. I say unnecessary because the core game itself is strong enough to not require any help from add ons. Yet the online is a great inclusion. It uses the same engine as the core game, and the exact same control scheme. This allows you to pick up the online after playing the main game and not have very many teathing issues. The game itself is fast paced and fairly lag free. And the game separates games out by skill level, so noobies to the online shooters can play without being too intimitated. ![]() Albeit not a necessary addition to the game, it's welcomed with open arms. End thoughts: This is one of the few games to live up to the hype. The graphics are the best I've seen in any game and the story is enthralling to the very end. The only true complaint I have is there will be no more... I don't think. Scoring: Graphics: A+ - The best I've ever seen. Not much can touch it. Sound: A+ - With an excellent sound track, superb voice acting and perfect sound effects, it keeps the game in the right mood. Gameplay: A - Upgraded controlls and many new features make the game a joy to play. Story: A+ - In depth and involved. They really make you care about what's going on. Online: A - One of the best online shooters on the market. Honestly it's capable of standing on it's own without any game to go with it. Replay Value: A+ - With tons of extra goodies and a great online mode, this is a game that won't be on the shelf collecting dust once you beat it. Over all: A+ The game is easily one of the best to come out in a long while, and honestly one of the best I've ever played. If you have the opportunity to play this, take it. You won't regret it. It's almost more fun to review games I don't like. But it's more fun playing games that I can't find any fault with. |

Yes, I have to agree..i also am a fan of Metel Gear Solid and heard and even seen my friend play..Sadly i don't own a PS3 so i cannot buy this game(which infuriates me) but If I could i would. This game has the best graphics, and it takes the most space out of any game made...and for good purpose. I comletly agree with this review and by the way, very nice review. This is how reviews should be, well organized... As for the online, i don't see it as being part of the game, but more of an extra like mentioned. My friend doesn't find the Online as great though, but he mentioned that first he must beat the Story, and he is addicted to it. |

I think it is helpful. If someone considered buying this game and looked at this review, then the extra good score on online might make him buy it. |
Oh... oh no..."That's Mama Luigi to you!" ![]() Staying true to Nintendo... However hard that might be. | |

Whoever says that Metal Gear Soild 4 sucks really needs to just get a different hobby. And Halo, will never, ever surpass Metal Gear Solid in terms of greatness. Ever. And by this post you're just continuing to display the stereotype of a Halo addict. A moron. |

Way to be one of the biggest idiots on the planet. I wasn't talking about halo, nor will I ever. And what Dan said is true. Metal Gear in terms of story, gameplay and emmersion will own Halo 'till the day microsoft sucks every last bit of life out of the franchise. Now if you don't have any usefull comments, gtfo. To any mods, sorry but his type irritate me to no end. Probably an 8 year old. Edited by eomund, Jun 24 2008, 11:31 AM.
